Three Pirkey Barber associates received the Judge Suzanne Covington Pro Bono Service Award on behalf of Volunteer Legal Services (VLS) of Central Texas. Every year, VLS honors attorneys and law firms that exemplify Judge Covington’s extraordinary commitment to pro bono legal services.
Recognized at a special event attended by a group of outstanding volunteers, judges, attorneys, and other legal community leaders, this year’s Pirkey Barber honorees include associates David Armendariz, Erik Combs, and Elizabeth Stafki. Because of their tireless support, VLS was able to bring much-needed legal services to the greater community, as well as ensure that those struggling to meet their basic needs of safety and security, housing, education, and health have somewhere to turn for legal help.
VLS is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization that provides civil legal services to low-income people through attorney volunteers in Travis County. Volunteer attorneys assist individuals with critical matters, such as helping victims of abuse end violent relationships, connecting persons with disabilities with medical and financial benefits, and keeping people out of homelessness by defending against wrongful evictions and foreclosures. VLS clients include minimum wage earners with dependents and those on fixed incomes—people who could never afford legal assistance, even when their need is desperate.
